Hair Straightening and Uterine Cancer

Even though we're now more than ever rocking our natural hair texture, many of us still feel the need to use chemical hair straightening to make our hair straighter and smoother. But at what cost?

A recent study has revealed how chemical hair straightening products may be linked with an increased risk of uterine cancer in women.

Let’s look at some study highlights

  • Compared to women who don't use these products, women who used straightening or relaxing products more than four times per year had a greater than doubled risk of developing uterine cancer.
  • By the age of 70, uterine cancer strikes about 1.64% of women who don't use chemical hair straightening products. However, that risk increases to 4.05% for regular users of these products.
  • According to the study, African American women and those who engage in little physical exercise were more likely to use hair straightening products.

Uterine Cancer and its many threats

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), uterine cancer, though it may be rare, is the most frequent gynecologic cancer in the country, with around 66,000 new cases reported per year. Rates are also rising (almost doubling), especially among Black women.

RESOURCES

  • The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), another charity that assists with medical expenses. It has a program called "Unmet Needs" to help military families that are struggling financially as a result of a military-related activity.
  • Cancer treatments can pile up that medical bill. To ease some of that, CancerCare helps uninsured individuals by covering the cost of chemotherapy and all cancer drugs.
  • You might be hesitant to visit an out-of-network doctor, but filing an out-of-network claim is straightforward with OONOLOGY.

HEALTHY BITES

  • How to pick an OTC hearing aid: Being an informed buyer is applicable in all niches but particularly when picking the right OTC hearing aid. For first-time users, it's advisable to allow yourself at least 30 days to decide on a model of choice.
  • FOMO induces alcohol consumption: ‘fear of missing out as the internet likes to call it is a factor that pushes individuals of ages between 18-34 to engage in alcohol consumption to high degrees.
  • Quitting Smoking among women: it is especially hard to quit smoking among women due to less estrogen production because of nicotine’s estrogen-inhibiting activity.
  • Multiple medications & Dementia: Recent research describing polypharmacy (multiple prescription drugs) trends before dementia diagnosis revealed that medication use patterns grew more similar as subjects got closer to the date of diagnosis.
  • Eye examination: An eye examination can not only save our eyes but can tell a lot about the condition of the rest of our body. Because the condition of the rest of the body's blood vessels and nerves can be seen in the eye, many severe illnesses can be identified there.
