Headaches

At Advanced Headache Center, our treatment plans are uniquely designed to treat the individual suffering from headaches. We understand headache triggers and work with each patient to formulate a plan that will be unique to their condition.

Our headache doctors provide a comprehensive diagnostic work-up and review of health history prior to setting a treatment plan. Many patients have seen a doctor in the past for their headache but have simply not found lasting relief. Fortunately, our headache doctors are skilled in a multimodal approach to accurately diagnosing and treating your pain.

What is a migraine headache?

A migraine headache is an intense headache that can become so severe that it can disrupt your day-to-day life. Migraine headaches can be very painful but also cause a surplus of other symptoms not associated with a general headache. Migraines can also be a chronic condition and can be due to other factors.

What are the symptoms of migraine headaches?

While the symptoms of migraine headaches vary depending on each individual, the most common signs and symptoms of a migraine headache include: intense pain, throbbing or pulsing in one or multiple sides of the head, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound.

While some people only experience a migraine headache once in a while, for others, migraine headaches can be debilitating and/or chronic.

Trigger Point Injections

Trigger Point Injections

A Trigger Point Injection (TPI) is an outpatient procedure designed to reduce or relieve the pain of trigger points. Trigger points are small, tender knots that can form in muscles or the fascia (the soft, stretchy connective tissue surrounding muscles and organs). A Trigger Point Injection is a non-surgical procedure for pain that only takes a few minutes to complete in the office.

In preparation for a Trigger Point Injection for pain, the patient is positioned comfortably. The physician will then press and pinch the skin to locate the targeted trigger point. Once identified, the physician cleanses the skin. A topical anesthetic may be used to numb the area temporarily.

The physician will carefully insert a needle into the trigger point, injecting an anesthetic mixture. This mixture causes the trigger point to relax. While it is common to feel relief after one trigger point injection, each patient is different, and your physician may recommend additional injections.

Botox Injections

Botox Injections

Botox (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable that may be used — in tiny doses administered by a trained, licensed headache specialist — to treat migraines and some other headaches. Botox for migraines is a safe treatment, approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in October 2010 to treat recurrent headaches.

Botox is commonly recommended to ease the pain from chronic migraines temporarily. These headaches occur 15 times or more each month — and for at least eight of those days, the attacks last for four or more hours. These are serious, life-changing headaches.

If you suffer from debilitating migraine attacks, talk to Dr. Amr Hosny, a leading headache specialist at the Advanced Headache Center in Manhattan or Bergen County, New Jersey. This Harvard-trained interventional spine specialist uses the latest medical technology, including Botox for migraines, to help you get back to your normal lifestyle, pain-free.

Intravenous Infusions

Intravenous Infusions

Intravenous Infusions occur when a group of medications is sent directly into your veins using a needle or a tube.

Many patients prefer not to rely on painkillers or narcotic medication to ease headaches and gravitate towards safe and painless infusion therapy.

Infusions for headaches reduce headache pain and frequency and assist patients in weaning off of medication if currently on it.

Infusions often consist of magnesium which is known to produce safe and effective headache relief. Infusions can give fast relief through a blend of medications designed to simultaneously treat pain, nausea, and inflammation.

The drugs used in headache infusions target the proteins that initiate the cascade of events that cause migraines. The infusion subdues the overactive nerve endings to calm the irritation that initiates a migraine or headache. The treatments have been shown to remain effective for as long as one month after the treatment or longer depending on the individual.

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block

The Sphenopalatine Ganglion is a collection of nerves behind the nose that is often responsible for chronic headaches and head pain. This Ganglion is linked to the trigeminal nerve, the main nerve involved in a headache, migraine, or facial pain.

The Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block is frequently used to treat migraines, cluster headaches, and facial pain. This is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed in our outpatient center. The procedure is painless and takes about 20 minutes to be performed under fluoroscopy to confirm the precise delivery of medications.

The doctor uses a soft, specially designed catheter to reach the Sphenopalatine Ganglion during the procedure comfortably. Then, local anesthetics (or numbing medications) are applied to block the Sphenopalatine Ganglion, blocking nerve signals that cause headaches.

This procedure can result in immediate and long-lasting relief for many patients.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional form of Chinese medicine used to help alleviate many pain conditions. It can be very effective in the treatment of migraines and headaches. Acupuncture works by stimulating the nervous system and promoting a feeling of relaxation.

The Acupuncture needle triggers a response from the nervous system. This response from the nervous system leads our brain to release a cascade of natural painkillers. Acupuncture needles signal the brain to direct blood flow to affected areas. With increased blood flow in the head and neck, acupuncture helps relax the muscles there. This direction of blood flow addresses the physical mechanism causing the tension headache pain. In a typical Acupuncture session, sterile, hair-thin needles are inserted into the body by a Certified Acupuncturist for anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes. Due to the thinness of Acupuncture needles, pain is not often experienced during an Acupuncture session.

Home Remedies for Headaches

Home Remedies for Headaches

Home remedies for headaches are often the best course of action to take when you’re just starting to get a headache. Popping a pill may sound like an easier choice, but even over-the-counter medications can aggravate your headache or cause chronic headaches. Home remedies offer relief from the pain your headache causes, but without aggravating the condition.

To better understand which home remedy may work for your headache, consult a medical specialist who understands headache causes, triggers, and treatments. Harvard-trained Dr. Amr Hosny has years of experience working with patients suffering from headaches. His practice, the Advanced Headache Center, has eight locations throughout Manhattan and across the river in Bergen County, New Jersey. The right diagnosis is important as there is a vast difference between types of headaches, such as:
