What is MRI of the breast?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions. MR imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. The images can then be examined on a computer monitor, printed or copied to CD. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (x-rays).

What are some common uses of the procedure?
MRI of the breast is not a replacement for mammography or ultrasound imaging but rather a supplemental tool for detecting and staging breast cancer and other breast abnormalities.
MR imaging of the breast is performed to:

* assess multiple tumor locations, especially prior to breast conservation surgery
* identify early breast cancer not detected through other means, especially in women with dense breast tissue and those at high risk for the disease
* evaluate abnormalities detected by mammography or ultrasound.

What is Mammography?
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose x-ray system to examine breasts. A mammography exam, called a mammogram, is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases in women.

Digital mammography, also called full-field digital mammography (FFDM), is a mammography system in which the x-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electrical signals. These detectors are similar to those found in digital cameras. The electrical signals are used to produce images of the breast that can be seen on a computer screen or printed on special film similar to conventional mammograms. From the patient's point of view, having a digital mammogram is essentially the same as having a conventional film screen mammogram.

What are some common uses of the procedure?
Mammograms are used as a screening tool to detect early breast cancer in women experiencing no symptoms and to detect and diagnose breast disease in women experiencing symptoms such as a lump, pain or nipple discharge.

What is MRI of the body?
MR imaging uses a powerful magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. Detailed MR images allow physicians to better evaluate parts of the boday and certain diseases that may not be assessed adequately with other imaging methods such as x-ray, ultrasound, or computed tomography (also called CT or CAT scanning).

What is the difference between an Open MRI and High-Field MRI?
Open MRI is an outstanding tool for scanning patients who would otherwise not be able to benefit from MRI's invaluable diagnostic capabilities. Featuring a much larger patient gantry and an open-end design, Open MRI systems have become an attractive option for patients who have difficulty with the size contraints of conventional MRI systems, and provide patient-friendly environment for high quality routine head, neck, body, and musculoskeletal MRI exams.

What is Digital General X-Ray?

X-rays are the oldest and most frequently used form of medical imaging.

What are some common uses of the procedure?
A bone x-ray is used to:

* diagnose broken bones or joint dislocation.
* demonstrate proper alignment and stabilization of bony fragments following treatment of a fracture.
* guide orthopedic surgery, such as spine repair/fusion, joint replacement and fracture reductions.
* look for injury, infection, arthritis, abnormal bone growths, bony changes seen in metabolic conditions.
* assist in the detection and diagnosis of bone cancer.
* locate foreign objects in soft tissues around or in bones

What is ultrasound?
Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays). Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body's internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels.

Conventional ultrasound displays the images in thin, flat sections of the body. Advancements in ultrasound technology include three-dimensional (3-D) ultrasound that formats the sound wave data into 3-D images. Four-dimensional (4-D) ultrasound is 3-D ultrasound in motion.

What is Multidetector CT/CTA?
Multidetector computed tomography(MDCT) is a form of CT technology for diagnostic imaging. In MDCT, a two-dimensional array of detector elements replaces the linear array of detector elements used in typical conventional and helical CT scanners. The two-dimensional detector array permits CT scanners to acquire multiple slices or sections simultaneously and greatly increase the speed of CT image acquisition.

CT scanning (sometimes called CAT scanning) is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.

CT imaging combine special x-ray equipment with sophisticated computers to produce multiple images or pictures of the inside of the body.

CT scans of internal organs, bone, soft tissue and blood vessels provide greater clarity and reveal more details than regular x-ray exams. Using specialized equipment and expertise to create and interpret CT scans of the body, radiologists can more easily diagnose problems such as cancers, cardiovascular disease, infectious disease, trauma and musculoskeletal disorders.

What is a Bone Density Scan (DEXA)?
Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD).

In some communities, a CT scan with special software can also be used to diagnose or monitor low bone mass (QCT). This is accurate but less commonly used than DEXA scanning.

Conventional arthrography is the x-ray examination of a joint that uses a special form of x-ray called fluoroscopy and a contrast material containing iodine.
