GARDASIL is the only human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that helps protect against 4 types of HPV. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases and 2 more types that cause 90% of genital warts cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 90% of genital warts cases.

GARDASIL also helps protect girls and young women ages 9 to 26 against 70% of vaginal cancer cases and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases.

GARDASIL may not fully protect everyone, nor will it protect against diseases caused by other HPV types or against diseases not caused by HPV. GARDASIL does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, so it’s important for women to continue routine cervical cancer screenings. GARDASIL does not treat cancer or genital warts. GARDASIL is given as 3 injections over 6 months.

We may recommend a Colposcopy if your pelvic exam and Pap test appear abnormal.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial Vaginosis

What Is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the name of a condition in women where the normal balance of bacteria in the vagina is disrupted and replaced by an overgrowth of certain bacteria. It is sometimes accompanied by:

  • Discharge
  • Odor
  • Pain
  • Itching
  • Burning

How Common Is Bacterial Vaginosis?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. In the United States, BV is common in pregnant women.

Plan B Emergency Contraception

Plan B Emergency Contraception

In 1999, the FDA approved Plan B. It is a two-dose regimen: you take two pills 12 hours apart. Each pill contains 0.75 milligrams of progestin levonorgestrel. This is a synthetic hormone that has been used in birth control pills for more than 35 years. But the levels of progestin in Plan B (and Plan B One-Step) are higher than those in birth control pills.

In 2009, the FDA approved Plan B One-Step. It is a one-dose regimen: you take one pill. The pill contains 1.5 milligrams of levonorgestrel. Research has shown that taking Plan B One-Step up to 72 hours after unprotected sex works just as well as Plan B. And it doesn’t cause increased side effects. So Plan B One-Step is replacing Plan B, although it may still be available in some pharmacies and health centers until supplies run out.

Beginning in 2009, Plan B and Plan B One-Step became available without a prescription to women aged 17 and older. But you must show proof of age. They are available by prescription to women younger than age 17.

IUD Birth Control

IUD Birth Control

The letters IUD stand for “intrauterine device.” IUDs are small, “T-shaped” devices made of flexible plastic. A health care provider inserts an IUD into a woman’s uterus to prevent pregnancy.

There are two brands of IUD available in the United States:

  • ParaGard – IUD contains copper. It is effective for 12 years.
  • Mirena – IUD releases a small amount of progestin, a hormone. It is effective for five years.
Pelvic Exam

Pelvic Exam

To stay healthy, women should have a physical exam every year. Most of the time, the pelvic examination is a part of this annual exam. It’s also a time for the Obstetrician/Gynecologist to provide reassurance of normal anatomy and answer specific questions.

Pelvic Exam

A pelvic examination is a complete physical exam of a woman’s pelvic organs by a health professional. A pelvic exam helps a health professional evaluate:

  • Size of the vagina
  • Position of the vagina
  • Cervix
  • Uterus
  • Ovaries
Sonohysterogram / Hysterosonogram

Sonohysterogram / Hysterosonogram

Women who suspect they may have polyps, fibroids, or who have experienced recurrent pregnancy loss when they are trying to conceive are likely to undergo a hysterosonogram. Also known as a sonohysterogram, this diagnostic test is similar to a hysterosal pinogram but involves the use of ultrasound to get a more detailed picture of the reproductive organs.

How The Test Is Done

Thanks to the highly sensitive nature of the test, a hysterosalpingogram hysterosonogram is often able to pick up on problems in the uterus or ovaries that a hysterosalpingogram may miss.

Cervical Biopsy

Cervical Biopsy

The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that forms a canal that opens into the vagina and leads to outside the body. The tissue that’s removed is then closely examined under a microscope.

A cervical biopsy is normally performed during a colposcopy procedure or Pap Smear biopsy procedure.

Cervical Biopsy

What Is a Cervical Biopsy?

A cervical biopsy is a procedure that is performed to remove tissue from the cervix to test for abnormal cells or precancerous conditions.
