URO ONCOLOGY

URO ONCOLOGY

A urologic oncologist is a physician with special training in diagnosing and treating cancers of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. These organs include the bladder, kidneys, prostate, penis and testicles. Urological cancers are relatively common, with prostate, bladder and kidney cancers among the 10 most common cancers diagnosed in the United States. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men. Urologic oncologists are trained to treat urinary tract malignancies using a variety of tools and technologies designed to treat the disease while sparing healthy tissue. A urologic oncologist will work closely with your care team to tailor treatments to your specific cancer, help reduce side effects and address issues of sexual function. Surgery often is the primary treatment for many urologic cancers. The type of surgery may depend on the type of cancer and its stage. If a urologic cancer has metastasized, treatment may also include chemotherapy, radiation therapy targeted therapy or immunotherapy.

KIDNEY STONE

KIDNEY STONE

Kidney stones (also called renal calculi, nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis) are hard deposits made of minerals and salts that form inside your kidneys. Diet, excess body weight, some medical conditions, and certain supplements and medications are among the many causes of kidney stones. Kidney stones can affect any part of your urinary tract — from your kidneys to your bladder. Often, stones form when the urine becomes concentrated, allowing minerals to crystallize and stick together. Passing kidney stones can be quite painful, but the stones usually cause no permanent damage if they're recognized in a timely fashion. Depending on your situation, you may need nothing more than to take pain medication and drink lots of water to pass a kidney stone. In other instances — for example, if stones become lodged in the urinary tract, are associated with a urinary infection or cause complications — surgery may be needed.

PEDIATRIC UROLOGY

PEDIATRIC UROLOGY

Pediatric Urology is a sub-speciality of surgery which deals with disorders of the Genitourinary System in children, that includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, sexual and reproductive organs. Pediatric urological disorders are present in children from birth and are very different from that of adult urological problems. We focus on a wide range of urologic problems affecting children, including obstructions in the urinary tract, incontinence, vesicoureteral reflux, hypospadias, undescended testis, genital abnormalities and tumors of the kidney, bladder, vagina, and testes in children.

In many cases nowadays, urological problems can be managed successfully without surgery by waiting with careful observation, thus delaying or even avoiding the surgery completely. Advances in technology and instrumentation have made more and more Laparoscopic and Endoscopic urological surgeries possible in children, eliminating many other problems associated with open surgeries.

In cases where there is a need for a surgery, it is performed with great expertise, precision and care, considering the fact that the patient being operated on is a small child. The management of urological problems, if any, in a child can be planned even before the delivery of a child. To ensure this we work in collaboration with our obstetrician and pediatric nephrologist.

KIDNEY TRANPLANTATION

KIDNEY TRANPLANTATION

A kidney transplant is a surgery to place a healthy kidney from a living or deceased donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located on each side of the spine just below the rib cage. Each is about the size of a fist. Their main function is to filter and remove waste, minerals and fluid from the blood by producing urine.

When kidneys lose this filtering ability, harmful levels of fluid and waste accumulate in the body, which can raise blood pressure and result in kidney failure (end-stage renal disease). End-stage renal disease occurs when the kidneys have lost about 90% of their ability to function normally. End-stage renal disease occurs when the kidneys have lost about 90% of their ability to function normally.

Common causes of end-stage kidney disease include:

Diabetes
Chronic, uncontrolled high blood pressure
Chronic glomerulonephritis — an inflammation and eventual scarring of the tiny filters within the kidneys
Polycystic kidney disease
People with end-stage renal disease need to have waste removed from their bloodstream via a machine (dialysis) or a kidney transplant to stay alive.

At Mayo Clinic, health care professionals trained in many medical specialties work together as a team to ensure favorable outcomes from your kidney transplant.

Having all of this subspecialized expertise in a single place, focused on you, means that you're not just getting one opinion — your care is discussed among the team, your test results are available quickly, appointments are scheduled in coordination, and your transplant care team works together to determine what's best for you.

PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT

PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT

Benign prostate enlargement (BPE) is the medical term to describe an enlarged prostate, a condition that can affect how you pee (urinate).
In some men, the symptoms are mild and do not need treatment. In others, they can be very troublesome.

Causes of benign prostate enlargement
The cause of prostate enlargement is unknown, but it's believed to be linked to hormonal changes as a man gets older.

The balance of hormones in your body changes as you get older and this may cause your prostate gland to grow.

BPE is common in men aged over 50. It's not a cancer and it's not usually a serious threat to health.

Many men worry that having an enlarged prostate means they have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer. This is not the case.

The risk of prostate cancer is no greater for men with an enlarged prostate than it is for men without an enlarged prostate.

Symptoms of benign prostate enlargement
The prostate is a small gland, located in the pelvis, between the penis and bladder.

If the prostate becomes enlarged, it can place pressure on the bladder and the urethra, which is the tube that urine passes through.

This can affect how you pee and may cause:

difficulty starting to pee
a frequent need to pee
difficulty fully emptying your bladder

LASER TREAMTENT OF KIDNEY STONE

LASER TREAMTENT OF KIDNEY STONE

The presence of Kidney Stones in the human body can cause immense pain and discomfort. It becomes essential to get rid of the stones so that the normal activities of life continue uninterrupted. There are different procedures to get rid of the stones. If the stone is larger and cannot dispose while urination and gets stuck in the urinary tract, then surgery becomes the obvious choice.

There are different kinds of procedures available to treat the problem and one such treatment procedure is the Laser Kidney Stone Surgery.

This kind of surgery is minimally invasive in which a patient is under the effect of anaesthesia and a small lighted instrument known as the Ureteroscope is placed into the urethra and urinary bladder. This makes it easier to see the stone in the kidney and the ureter.

Holium laser energy is passed through the instrument to the stone, which is then broken to pieces. A small basket is used for the removal of the stones through the urethra and some pieces can pass through the urine.

An advanced and more powerful energy can be employed to break the stone to dust or powder. This too shall pass through the urine.
To ensure that the stones are completely removed from the Kidney, a tube called the Stent is placed between the Kidney and the Urethra. The time period for the stent to remain inside is 1-4 weeks after which it is removed from the kidney. The stent also allows the kidney to drain while healing is in progress.

MALE INFERTILITY

MALE INFERTILITY

What is Male Infertility?
Up to 15 percent of couples are infertile. This means they aren't able to conceive a child, even though they've had frequent, unprotected sexual intercourse for a year or longer. In over a third of these couples, male infertility plays a role.

Male infertility is due to low sperm production, abnormal sperm function or blockages that prevent the delivery of sperm. Illnesses, injuries, chronic health problems, lifestyle choices and other factors can play a role in causing male infertility.

How much sperm does a man produce in a day?
Testicles perform the process of spermatogenesis to produce new and fresh sperm. Spermatogenesis takes around 64 days. A million sperms are made by the testicles every day, around 1,500 every second.

After the full sperm generation cycle, sperm can be recovered up to 8 billion. This may appear excess, yet in a single milliliter of semen, a normal male human ejaculate somewhere in the range of 20 to 300 million sperm cells. Human body keeps up a surplus to guarantee there's a fresh supply for conception.
