Colposcopy

Colposcopy

A colposcopy usually is performed by your doctor in response to an abnormal Pap smear. The purpose of the colposcopy is to allow your doctor to examine your vagina, vulva and cervix. The reasons for an abnormal Pap smear can vary greatly, but they are caused most commonly by viral infections, such as the human papillomavirus (HPV).
IUD Birth Control

IUD Birth Control

The intrauterine device, most commonly referred to as an IUD, is a form of birth control. Shaped like a small “T,” it’s placed in your uterus by your doctor or healthcare provider. Your cervix then holds it tightly in place. IUD effectiveness is unchallenged; the IUD failure rate is less than 1 percent. In fact, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, IUDs are more effective at birth control than the pill, the vaginal ring, the patch and prophylactics.
Hymenectomy

Hymenectomy

A hymenectomy is a surgical procedure that’s performed specifically to remove the hymen artificially. There are a number of reasons that a young woman may have her hymen removed, including: To decrease discomfort during sex If there is an absence of normal menstruation, called amenorrhea Severe abdominal pain during a period
Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty

A vaginoplasty is simply a physical change to tighten your vagina. It won’t solve any of your emotional issues or sexual hang-ups. As you age, your vagina, like your other muscles, tends to weaken. As a result, sex becomes less fulfilling because the sensation isn’t as intense. A vaginoplasty can restore sensations, making sexual intercourse a rich experience again. Most of the women who opt for a vaginoplasty are older, in their 30s to their 50s. Many have had children and don’t want any more. A vaginoplasty doesn’t prevent you from having more children, but childbirth can undo the work of your gynecological plastic surgeon. And while it’s possible to get a second vaginoplasty, the procedure carries more risks and uncertainty.
Hysteroscopy

Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy is a procedure, using a tool called a hysteroscope to examine the lining of the uterus and identify, diagnose or treat abnormalities.

Reasons for a Hysteroscopy

A hysteroscopy may be performed to determine the cause of:

  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Infertility

It may also be used to diagnose and remove fibroids or polyps and find and reposition an intrauterine device.

Cervical dysplasia

Cervical dysplasia

A Pap test, or Pap smear, is part of a woman's annual wellness exam. The Pap test involves extracting a small sample of cells from the cervix. These cells are examined, in a lab, for abnormal cell changes. The Pap test is used in diagnosing cervical cancer and human papilloma virus, or HPV.

An abnormal Pap smear doesn't necessarily indicate a condition like HPV or cervical cancer. Pap smears detect any changes within the cervical cells, not just cervical cancer. Abnormal Pap smear results may indicate other conditions such as inflammation or infection. False positives are also possible from Pap smears, however further testing is recommended to protect your health whenever the Pap smear is abnormal.
