The comprehensive examination is an important part of your child’s first visit with us. It includes a thorough head and neck examination, as well as a nutritional and risk assessment. WHY YOU NEED TO HAVE REGULAR DENTAL CLEANINGS

Some patients assume their teeth are healthy because they brush and floss them every day. While this is an important oral healthcare routine, it doesn’t diminish the importance of getting regular dental cleanings in Coral Gables.

If you're not sure why you need to have regular dental cleanings, we've got you covered.

WHY ARE DENTAL CLEANINGS IMPORTANT?

Dental cleanings are important because they remove any plaque or tartar buildup on your teeth. Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on your teeth and can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Tartar is a hardened plaque that can build up on your teeth and can only be removed with dental instruments.

Dental cleanings also polish your teeth and remove any built-up stains. Polishing your teeth helps remove any bacteria and plaque that may be hiding in the nooks and crannies of your teeth. It also makes your teeth look brighter and healthier.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE A DENTAL CLEANING?

Most people should have a dental cleaning every six months, but your dentist may recommend more frequent cleanings if you have dental problems or if you aren't brushing and flossing regularly.

If you have dental insurance, most plans cover two dental cleanings per year.

Having regular dental cleanings is important for maintaining good oral health. If you haven't had a dental cleaning in a while, make an appointment with your dentist today.

REMINERALIZING TREATMENT

REMINERALIZING TREATMENT

Our office is happy to provide remineralizing treatment for your child’s teeth based on their caries risk assessment. In addition to fluoride treatment, our office carries MI Varnish, which is a specialized topical treatment that includes calcium and phosphate ions that helps strengthen your child’s teeth. Remineralizing treatments are recommended based upon your child’s developmental status and risk assessment.

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING

One of the most effective ways of reducing your child's risk for cavities is by altering what, and how your child consumes food. Depending on your child’s age, developmental status, and feeding habits, our staff will help make nutritional recommendations that can decrease your child’s risk of cavities.

ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTION

ORAL HYGIENE INSTRUCTION

Our staff is trained in the demonstration and education on how to properly care for your child’s teeth based upon their age and developmental status. You will leave an appointment with us harnessed with the skills to properly care for your children’s teeth and gums, in hopes of maintaining a childhood of good oral health.

NONRADIOGRAPHIC CARIES DETECTION METHODS

NONRADIOGRAPHIC CARIES DETECTION METHODS

Our office is equipped with the SoproCARE Caries Detector, which serves as both an intraoral camera and a caries detection aid. It can be used to track changes in your child’s dentition, and in monitoring pathology of the oral cavity. The SoproCARE allows for the earlier detection of cavities and may reduce your child’s need for certain radiographs.

ULTRA LOW DOSE RADIOGRAPHY

ULTRA LOW DOSE RADIOGRAPHY

Our office is equipped with the Planmeca® S3 Ultra Low-Dose Radiography Unit. It’s specialized child mode enables us to significantly decrease radiation exposure when attaining radiographs of your child’s dentition. If your child has difficulty with traditional intraoral sensors, this device has the ability to take X-rays from the outside of their mouths. This prevents your child from needing to place sensors intraorally.

 SEALANTS

SEALANTS

At Premier Pediatric Dentistry, we’re proud to offer dental sealants in Coral Gables. They’re a specialized type of coating applied to the chewing surfaces of teeth to protect them from decay.

While they are an essential part of preventive dentistry that can effectively protect teeth from cavities, they are not a replacement for regular brushing and flossing. If you think that dental sealants might be suitable for you or your child, we encourage you to read on to learn more about this service.

Invisalign

Invisalign

If you are considering getting your malocclusion treated, Premier Pediatric Dentistry offers Invisalign in Coral Gables. After a consultation with our dentist, you’ll find what will work for you best to achieve your desired smile.

Mouth Guard

Mouth Guard

The fabrication of a custom athletic sports guard is essential for all children engaging in contact sports. It serves to protect your child from dental injuries, and has also been thought to decrease the likelihood of concussion. We have the ability to make your child’s sports guard custom to their dentition, and to their liking.

COMPOSITE RESIN RESTORATIONS

COMPOSITE RESIN RESTORATIONS

Our most common restorative material for the treatment of cavities is known as a “white filling”. This treatment is recommended when a child has a cavity that extends into the inner portion of the tooth.

Once a cavity has penetrated into the inner layer of the tooth, it is irreversible and requires some form of surgical treatment.  This procedure consists of full, or partial removal of the cavitated portion of the tooth and replacement with a “white filling” to restore the tooth’s natural shape and form.

ANTERIOR AND POSTERIOR ZIRCONIA CROWNS

ANTERIOR AND POSTERIOR ZIRCONIA CROWNS

Some primary teeth with extensive cavities may require a full coverage crown in order to remain functional until your child's tooth naturally exfoliates.  Our office is proud to offer an esthetic option for both the anterior and posterior dentition.  Our “white crowns” are made of a biocompatible ceramic material, and best resembles a natural tooth.

POSTERIOR STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS

POSTERIOR STAINLESS STEEL CROWNS

If your child’s cavity is too large for us to place a white filling, we will recommend placing a full coverage prefabricated stainless steel crown. The components of the crown are similar to that of a piece of jewelry. The crown is expected to provide protection and strength until your child’s tooth exfoliates.

PULPOTOMY

PULPOTOMY

A pulpotomy is better known as a "baby root canal”, and many be indicated when a cavity has invaded the nerve tissue of your child’s tooth.  There are different medicaments available for this procedure; our office uses MTA, or Mineral Trioxide Aggregate, which has been shown to have a high rate of success.

Dental Extractions

Dental Extractions

In the case when a tooth is overetained or unrestorable due to cavity or dental infection, our office is available to perform dental extractions of both the primary and permanent dentition.

SILVER DIAMINE FLUORIDE

SILVER DIAMINE FLUORIDE

SDF is a medicament used to both decrease sensitivity and remineralize carious lesions.  The silver component is used to kill the bacteria within the cavity, and the fluoride works to remineralize the cavitated portion of your child’s tooth.

This medicament can be used for children who are unable to sit for traditional dental treatment, or as a less invasive option to treat a cavity.  When applied to the cavity, this liquid will turn the cavity a dark color. There may be options to mask this discoloration in certain situations.

ATRAUMATIC RESTORATIVE TECHNIQUE

ATRAUMATIC RESTORATIVE TECHNIQUE

SMART (Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Technique)

A SMART restoration is another name for a minimally invasive technique that can be used in precooperative or special needs children as a means to treat or halt the progression of the caries process. This in-office treatment must be combined with changes in your child’s diet and an increased focus on oral hygiene in order to be effective. The procedure does not require the use of local anesthesia and involves the placement of SDF to remineralize the cavity, followed by restoration with a tooth-colored filling or full coverage crown.

ICON RESIN INFILTRATION

ICON RESIN INFILTRATION

This technique is a minimally invasive treatment option for visible white (sometimes yellow and brown) spots on the enamel of your child's permanent dentition. White lesions may be caused by demineralization of the enamel, most often associated with post-orthodontic treatment, or they may be a result of congenital defects of the enamel. This treatment is a non-invasive and painless way to remove or blend the white spot to the natural shade of the remaining tooth. This treatment involves the application of an unfilled resin that will penetrate demineralized enamel and fade the appearance of white spot lesions.

SPACE MAINTENANCE

SPACE MAINTENANCE

If your child has prematurely lost a primary tooth, our office is equipped to fabricate a space-maintaining appliance. This appliance serves to hold the space for the future eruption of your child’s permanent tooth and helps to prevent shifting of adjacent teeth that can lead to tooth impaction.

NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION

NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION

Our office combines the use of local anesthesia and nitrous oxide sedation to provide a comfortable experience for your child during their dental procedure. Nitrous Oxide “Laughing Gas” is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask. The effects of nitrous oxide are mild, and you can typically observe your child feeling more calm and relaxed. These effects are quickly reversible and your child can resume normal activity shortly thereafter.
