 Spider and Varicose Vein Treatments

Spider and Varicose Vein Treatments

What causes Varicose Veins?

Blood moves towards the heart by valves in the blood vessel, which controls the one-way flow. Sitting or standing for long periods can cause blood to pool in the leg veins, increasing the pressure within the veins. As a result, the veins can stretch from the increased pressure. This may weaken the walls of the veins and damage the valves, making it harder to control the flow and thus increasing pressure. This pressure ultimately leads to the development of spider and varicose veins.

Are varicose veins dangerous?

However, it is important to know when these vein problems can have more serious side effects. Long-term mild swelling as a result of severe varicose veins can eventually produce serious skin and tissue problems such as ulcers and non-healing sores. Blood clots associated with deep vein thrombosis can be a problem as well. Varicose veins have the potential to become dangerous if they are not treated properly.

What Kind of Doctor Treats Varicose Veins?

Vein Specialist Centers address all types of vein conditions, including cosmetic spider veinsvaricose veins, and, when indicated, deep venous disease. We utilize the latest technological advances to customize a treatment plan for each patient’s needs. At the Vein Specialist Centers, you can be certain that you are in the hands of board-certified vein specialists, who have received formal residency training in vascular procedures.

When to Seek Treatment

Spider veins and varicose veins by themselves are quite harmless. However, if you are experiencing painful symptoms or desire to have vein removal for aesthetic purposes, our team is prepared to assist you.

How is Vein Disease Diagnosed?

The primary tool for the diagnosis of vein disease is ultrasound. This is test is performed during your initial consultation visit. It is a simple and safe diagnostic method with high accuracy that enables your vein doctor to immediately understand your vein condition.

ClariVein

ClariVein

What happens during a ClariVein procedure

How Is Clarivein Unique?

The ClariVein ® procedure works by treating the affected veins internally through a very small incision that is usually made on the upper thigh area. During the procedure, your vein specialist will insert a medical catheter with a rotating fiber on its end into the vein.

Once the device reaches the damaged vein, the fiber begins to rotate. As the fiber rotates, it carefully removes the lining of the damaged vein, while also delivering a medical solution to treat the underlying cause.

The catheter will continue to rotate for several minutes, and there may be a light humming sensation near the affected area, but it should not cause any major pain or discomfort.

In contrast to EVLT and Sclerotherapy, each of which uses a single method of closing a damaged vein, ClariVein ® uses two modes of action to treat the damaged vein and the underlying cause of the damage.

Is Clarivein Painful?

Like other treatments we offer at Vein Specialist Centers, this procedure is performed with local sedatives and is performed in an office-based setting at one of our vein treatment centers. The treatment session can be completed in as little as 30 minutes. Since no major incision is made and none of the tissue surrounding the affected area is damaged, there is very little chance of scarring or bruising. After a ClariVein ® treatment, patients are able to return to normal activities almost immediately.

Laser Ablation

Laser Ablation

How is Laser Vein Ablation Performed?

Utilizing ultrasound guidance, a laser fiber is inserted into the problematic vein through a tiny incision in the skin. Laser energy is then delivered directly into the vein to close it permanently. EVLA/EVLT takes less than one hour, and patients can drive on their own after the procedure.

What happens after Laser Vein Ablation?

You might be wondering what you can expect after your vein ablation. Once the procedure is complete, the blood is automatically redirected to healthy veins. Leg circulation actually improves immediately after the procedure! After your endovenous laser ablation treatment, walking is encouraged.

Is Laser Vein Ablation Painful?

Luckily, there is no need for any pain medications post-procedure, and most activities can be resumed in a few days. EVLT is highly effective in the treatment of venous reflux, with long-term success rates proven superior to surgical stripping.

sclerotherapy

sclerotherapy

What are the different sclerotherapy treatments?

Sclerotherapy treatment for spider and varicose veins is tailored to each patient’s condition. Our vein doctors will select the right preparation of sclerotherapy based on the severity of your vein disease and how you want to treat your spider veins.

Liquid Sclerotherapy: This is the most basic form of sclerotherapy treatment and involves direct injections of the liquid solution into the affected veins. This form is best suited for smaller spider veins.

Foam Sclerotherapy: During this treatment, small amounts of liquid solution are mixed with air to create a foamy, cream-like substance. This allows for greater activity against the diseased veins.

Foam sclerotherapy is 5x as potent as liquid sclerotherapy and an effective treatment for treating slightly larger feeder veins and venulectasias.

Ultrasound-guided Sclerotherapy: For varicose veins that are difficult to see, as well as large superficial veins, ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy can improve precision and accuracy where other techniques cannot. This technique requires more patience and skill on the vein doctor’s part. Vein Specialist Centers has ARDMS-certified technicians and physicians to successfully perform ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy techniques. ARDMS is the recognized standard for excellence in ultrasound.

How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?

Sclerotherapy has indications in both cosmetic treatments and those that are medically necessary. At your initial consultation, the vein specialist will assess for underlying venous insufficiency and the likelihood of insurance coverage. Cosmetic treatments are not covered through insurance.

Most procedures run between 15 minutes and 1 hour for cosmetic sclerotherapy. The average costs for cosmetic sclerotherapy in NJ is $300-$1200.

VenaSeal

VenaSeal

How is VenaSeal performed?

VenaSeal is performed in-office and typically takes less than one hour. Under ultrasound guidance, the patented VenaSeal treatment catheter is inserted into the vein through a tiny incision, similar to endovenous ablation. Once the catheter is in position, small amounts of adhesive are injected into the vein and the catheter is pulled through the length of the vein.

The catheter is then removed from the body and the vein is “glued” shut by the adhesive.

What are the advantages and limitations of VenaSeal?

Advantages

  • Effective outpatient procedure
  • Less discomfort due to decreased need for local anesthetic
  • Compression stockings are not necessary after VenaSeal treatment

Limitations

  • Limited coverage with medical insurance
  • Hypersensitivity reactions are more common than with RF vein ablation

Is VenaSeal Covered By Insurance?

There is still limited coverage for VenaSeal depending on the insurance carrier. If your vein specialist opts for VenaSeal, prior authorization will be obtained by our insurance specialists to cover the procedures.

When you choose the VenaSeal procedure at the best Vein Specialist Centers, you can rest assured that you’re in great hands. VenaSeal is one of the most in-demand treatments performed by our Ivy League-trained vein specialists.

Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy

When is Microphlebectomy Preferred?

These treatments are carefully evaluated against sclerotherapy and generally reserved for larger veins. While sclerotherapy is done by simple injections, it can be associated with longer recovery periods. Ambulatory phlebectomy is notable for more immediate results and higher levels of patient satisfaction in the right settings.

Does Microphlebectomy Cause Scarring?

Phlebectomy is still a minimally-invasive procedure. The procedure is done in the office and does not require more than just local anesthesia. Our board-certified vein doctors will use targeted mapping of the veins and with tiny incisions directly over the varicose vein segments, removing them in a single setting.
