Dr. Ryan graduated in abstract mathematics with praise from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. He went to Indiana University School of Medicine and graduated in 1988 to become the 4th generation "Dr. Ryan". He completed his internship in surgery at The John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore along with an additional year as Junior Assistant Resident, 1988-1990. Dr. Ryan went on to complete his orthopedic residency program at The Ohio State University Hospitals from 1991-1996. Upon completion, he joined Lexington Orthopaedic Associates, now merged with Kentucky Bone & Joint Surgeons.

General surgeon, Dr. Ryan has served as the Vice President of Kentucky Orthopedic Society from 2007-2009, followed by the President from 2009-2011. Currently, he represents Kentucky at the AAOS Board of Councilors. His lectures include biomechanics of the golf swing, as well as analysis of new orthopedic materials. He works with the motto: Saving the world one limb at a time.

Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Ryan is interested in replacement surgeries for the hip and knee. He is experienced in the non-operative and surgical management of conditions involving elbow, shoulder, hips, hands, knees, and feet. Complete joint replacement of hip and knee is his most common procedure. He also keeps a steady practice of carpal tunnel surgery along with minor hand and fracture surgery.

He started performing anterior approach total hip arthroplasty in 2010 and has recently completed his 674th such operation (and counting). Many of these surgeries were done as same-day outpatient surgery at Kentucky Surgery Center.

Brought up in Columbus, Indiana, he now prefers Lexington to be his home. He resides there with his wife, Toni. His son, Wilson, is an electrical engineer in California while his daughter, Abby, can be found in his office assisting him and preparing to be the fifth generation "Dr. Ryan".
