Chiropractic Care – Serving Bellevue, NE and the Greater Omaha Area

chiropractic adjustment (also know as a manipulation) is a common therapeutic treatment for back pain.  Chiropractic care has become more and more prevalent and researched as an effective treatment in conservative care.  The Chiropractic adjustment is used to induce motion into a dysfunctional joint.  Joints that have abnormal movement patterns or become dysfunctional alter the biomechanics of the joint and divert excess forces to surrounding muscles, joints, soft-tissues which often results in pain.

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy

Rehabilitation and Physical Therapy for Patients in Bellevue, NE

Rehabilitation is the treatment of physical dysfunction or injury by the use of therapeutic exercise and the application of modalities to restore or facilitate normal function and movement. If you suffer from physical limitations and/or ongoing pain caused by an injury or illness, rehabilitation and physical therapy can help you lead a fuller life.  It includes the evaluation, treatment and/or prevention of neuromuscular and musculoskeletal disorders which produce physical impairments and/or functional limitations.

Ask yourself: Have you ever experienced an injury? If so, how well did you recover? Did you take the proper time to heal, and then make sure to regain mobility, stability, and proper movement patterns? If you’re like most people the answer is no. According to Gray Cook and the Functional Movement Screen (FMS), the number one predictor of an injury is a past injury. If you had previously sprained an ankle you will not necessarily sprain that ankle again, however you may incur another injury or issue such as hip pain due to improper movement patterns learned by compensating for the original injury.

Active Release Technique (ART) at Our Bellevue Physical Therapy

Active Release Technique (ART) at Our Bellevue Physical Therapy

Active Release Technique (ART) helps to keep special protein structures called connective tissues healthy. When the connective tissues are healthy, muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and organs work properly. When your connective tissues are not healthy, Active Release Technique (ART) helps to treat the soft tissue in your body through movement and various soft tissue techniques, which help to break down adhesions. Adhesions are scar tissue that have built up over time and caused stiffness and pain. If adhesions attach to the muscles or nerves, it creates unhealthy connective tissue, which decreases the functionality of the tissue. Active Release Technique (ART) helps to release the adhesions so that the connective tissue is truly healthy and working properly.

If you have issues with your muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia, or nerves, Active Release Technique might be the perfect chiropractic service for you. Active Release Technique helps patients who experience constant headaches, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, shin splints, shoulder pain, sciatica, plantar fasciitis, knee problems, and tennis elbow. By carefully moving and manipulating the soft tissue in your muscles, patients will feel relief from their pain and stiffness. Feel free to learn more about Active Release Technique below or contact us today to schedule an appointment with our professional chiropractor in the Omaha, NE, area.

Dry Needling Therapy

Dry Needling Therapy

What Is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling (DN) is an effective therapy to treat muscular tension and spasm which commonly accompanies conditions such as arthritis, nerve irritation, muscular strain, ligament strains and herniated discs.  The Dry Needling treatment consists of utilizing a thin hypodermic needle which is inserted into a painful contracted muscle to create a local twitch reflex which is both diagnostic and therapeutic as it is the first step in breaking the pain cycle as research shows will decrease muscle contraction, reduce chemical irritation, improve flexibility and decrease pain.

When an injury occurs from repetitive use or acute trauma, inflammation will be produced from the damaged tissues.  The damaged tissues will also go into a protective tension state or contracture to guard against further damage from utilizing the injured tissue.  This contracture and inflammation inhibit microcirculation which limits both the oxygen rich blood reaching the injury and the waste products leaving the injury.  The injury site becomes hypoxic (decreased in oxygen) which causes the body to create scar tissue.  This fibrosis and scarring builds up around the muscles and tissues limiting the tissues ability to function and can also cause compression and irritation of nerves.

NormaTec Recovery Boots

NormaTec Recovery Boots

What Are NormaTec Recovery Boots?

According to the NormaTec website, NormaTec is the leader in rapid recovery—their systems give a competitive edge to the world’s elite athletes, coaches, and trainers. The NormaTec recovery Systems are dynamic compression devices designed for recovery and rehab designed to help athletes recover faster between trainings and after performance. The boots act as a pneumatic vaso-compressive device using compressed air to massage your limbs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery. When you use our systems, you will first experience a pre-inflate cycle, during which the connected attachments are molded to your exact body shape. The session will then begin by compressing your feet, calves, knee and upper quad. Similar to the kneading and stroking done during a massage, each segment of the attachment will first compress in a pulsing manner and then release. This will repeat for each segment of the attachment as the compression pattern works its way up your leg.

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM)

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization IASTM

Instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) is a specialized form of myofascial release used to treat soft tissue problems. The technique involves the use of patented stainless steel instruments to identify and treat areas of soft tissue dysfunction and pain. The instruments release adhesions and restrictions in the muscle, tendon, ligament or fascia to relieve pain, increase circulation and improve motion. Instruments are designed to adapt to various tissues, shapes and curves to stretch the connective tissue and muscle fibers

Rock Tape and Kinesio Tape Sports Chiropractor

Rock Tape and Kinesio Tape Sports Chiropractor

What is Rock Tape and Kinesio Tape?

Rock Tape is a type of therapeutic kinesiology tape designed to aid in the treatment and healing of various sports injuries.

According to Rock Tape, the application of the tape decreases pain. More specifically, it runs interference on pain.  Rock Tape applied to the skin can interfere with painful nerve signals, which are directed to the brain. When the signals arriving to the brain are altered, it does not produce the sensation of pain. When kinesiology tape is properly applied, it helps to change how your body interprets pain.  Rock Tape does so by affecting the nerve endings and different types of receptors in the skin of the injured area.

Myofascial Release Modalities

Myofascial Release Modalities

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial Release is a whole body, hands on approach to treatment, producing a profound healing effect upon the body tissues, eliminating pain and restoring motion. At Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic we develop treatment plans that are individualized and customized to each person’s needs. They treat the “cause of the problem” to eliminate the symptoms, in order to make permanent structural changes to help people return to a pain free, active lifestyle.

There are two types of myofascial release: direct and indirect.

  • Direct myofascial release (or deep tissue work) method works on the restricted fascia (it is the bag that surrounds each of our muscles). Practitioners use manual techniques, or other instrument assisted soft tissue methods to slowly stretch the tight fascia by applying a moderate force. Direct myofascial release looks to stretch, lengthen, or mobilize adhesive tissues. The practitioner moves slowly through the layers of the fascia until the deep tissues are reached.
  • The indirect method involves a gentle stretch, with only minimal pressure, which allows the fascia to “unwind” itself. The gentle traction applied to the restricted fascia will result in heat and increased blood flow in the area. This allows the body’s inherent ability for self correction to return, thus eliminating pain and restoring the optimum performance of the body.
Neuromobilization Treatments

Neuromobilization Treatments

What Are Neuromobilization Techniques?

Neuromobilization is a technique that we utilize to treat nerves that may be adhered, irritated, or compressed in the surrounding tissues. Many patients that have been unresponsive to other treatments and present with a history of referred symptoms like pain, numbness, or tingling into the arms or legs may respond to neuromobilization. Every patient that presents with referred symptoms or pain that has been unresponsive to localized treatment receives a complete neural dynamics evaluation. Neurodynamic testing is a way for us to determine the extent of nerve involvement and the proper treatment to minimize and resolve your issue.

Traction Therapy Treatments

Traction Therapy Treatments

What is Traction Therapy?

Mechanical traction therapy utilizing Flexion Distraction is a chiropractic technique used to treat many conditions of the lumbar spine. It is a non-surgical technique aimed at increasing spinal motion and resolving disc bulges and disc herniations. The treatment is excellent as a safe, gentle, non-force procedure and works well to take pressure off the spinal nerves that may be injured or dysfunctional.

Clinical Benefits of Traction Therapy:

  • Reduce pressure on the spinal nerves from a disc bulge or herniation
  • Increase spinal motion within the disc and spinal joints
  • A conservative option to surgery for herniated discs
  • Reducing symptoms of sciatica
Nutrition and Diet Consulting

Nutrition and Diet Consulting

Nutritional approaches to pain management can involve both changes in diet and the use of dietary supplements, including vitamins, minerals, enzymes and other substances. These strategies can be used to prevent pain, such as migraine headaches, or promote the relief of pain and inflammation as part of a comprehensive pain management strategy.

We now know that every meal will either promote or inhibit inflammation. If we are not taught to eat properly then we start to inflame dietarily when we are young and this continues as we age. Eventually, the combination of a pro-inflammatory diet, lack of exercise, lack of sleep, and stress will generate a magnified pro-inflammatory state.

Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic supports Dr. David Seaman and the “deflame” guidelines at www.deflame.com.  “Deflaming” is the term coined to describe the process of inflammation reduction. We can deflame with both diet and supplements. The theme at deflame.com is repetitive. It is about reducing inflammation with The Anti-Inflammatory Diet and nutritional supplements. That is our goal and it should also be your goal.

Function Movement Screening Services

Function Movement Screening Services

Functional Movement Screen in Omaha, NE

Two movement screens that are utilized at Behm Muscle & Joint Clinic are the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA).  Dr. Behm is certified in both the FMS and SFMA assessments.  According to FMS, the movement screen itself captures fundamental movements, motor control within movement patterns, and competence of basic movements uncomplicated by specific skills.  The screen is designed to determine the greatest areas of movement deficiency, demonstrate limitations or asymmetries and correlate with an outcome.

The FMS is comprised of seven movement tests that require a balance of mobility and stability.  many people are able to preform a wide range of activities, yet are unable to efficiently execute the movements in the screen.  Those individuals who score poorly on the screens are using compensatory movement patterns and if they continue lead to poor biomechanics and future injury.  The FMS screen brings these faulty movements to light, allowing us to prevent the possibility of future injury before occurrence.

The SFMA is a comprehensive movement screen assessment used to classify movement patterns and direct manual therapy and therapeutic exercise techniques.  The assessment helps identify individual movement pattern deficiencies and the provocation of pain within movement patterns that is unique to each individual.
