Harnessing your body’s natural healing process.

For the past 2,000 years, acupuncture has been successfully used in Eastern medicine to treat a variety of conditions. More recently, Western medical providers have come to recognize the benefits of acupuncture as an effective treatment option for many conditions. It can be used alone or in concert with other medical practices to prevent and promote emotional and physical wellness.

Medical acupuncture promotes your body’s natural healing process. With the insertion of fine needles and the application of electrical stimulation at precise points, acupuncture stimulates your body to release special hormones that relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve circulation, and increase your sense of well-being. In the hands of a well-trained physician, medical acupuncture can be used to promote wellness, improve energy, prevent illness, and treat various medical conditions.

Do you need help with your allergies? Are you sniffly, stuffy, itchy or experiencing something more severe? If so, Vanguard Medical Group offers an array of options with treatment from a professional allergist. From food allergies to environmental irritants, we’re able to help eliminate your symptoms so you can enjoy a better quality of life.

The Allergies We Treat

Allergies come from multiple sources, and their symptoms can range in intensity from minor to severe or even life-threatening. Our experienced allergist can help address any of the following allergies:

  • Food
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Seasonal and year-round
  • Skin conditions
  • Bee stings
  • Medications
  • Dust
  • Dander
  • Pollen
  • Mold

To pinpoint your allergies, allergy testing may be completed. Our allergist is trained to administer and analyze these tests to determine proper action moving forward. Through a combination of skin and blood tests, your doctor can determine which allergens are triggering symptoms. Once these allergens are better understood, steps can be taken to reduce symptoms and achieve better well-being.

 Allergy Testing

Allergy Testing

Symptoms of allergies occur when our immune system overreacts to allergens, causing things like excessive sneezing, watery eyes, nasal and sinus congestion, and more. Allergy testing is used to determine what exactly you are allergic to so you can start to feel relief from those symptoms. Performed by a trained allergist, our allergy testing services can diagnose a variety of conditions such as:

  • Hay fever
  • Allergic asthma
  • Allergic dermatitis
  • Food allergy
  • Bee venom allergy

Living with allergies can seriously impact your daily life, causing you to miss out on important things like work, school, and social activities. Take control of your health when you receive an allergy test at Vanguard Medical Group today. With extensive experience and training, our team is able to diagnose and treat many behavioral health issues in patients over the age of 18.  Because we use a Collaborative Care model, you must be an established Vanguard patient to participate in our behavioral health program.

What Is Behavioral Health?

Behavioral health is the area of medicine that focuses on how cognitive habits and behaviors interact with and affect one’s overall wellbeing, including their emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Sometimes called mental health, behavioral health is a vital component of primary care, as studies show a clear link between mental disorders and chronic medical conditions. For instance, research has shown that individuals with diabetes, heart disease, or another chronic illness are more likely to develop depression or another behavioral health condition. Likewise, those suffering from untreated depression are more likely to develop a chronic disease.

Behavioral Health Conditions We Treat

As a primary care provider with behavioral health specialists on staff, Vanguard Medical Group offers behavioral health services that highlight our commitment to treat the whole person, as the connection between physical and mental health is a strong one. Examples of the behavioral health conditions and disorders we treat include the following:

We’re all involved with activities that put us at risk for concussions. If it is not an emergency situation, Vanguard Medical Group is here to help you get the treatment you need with 24/7 access to our Patient Portal. Learn more about our comprehensive concussion management services, including treating sports-related concussions, in the New Jersey area at Vanguard Medical Group.

What Is a Concussion?

Concussions are a form of mild traumatic brain injuries caused by blunt force to the head or upper body, as well as sudden, jolting motions. When these rough movements occur, your brain will shake and bounce, making contact with your skull. This will result in trauma to your brain, setting off a variety of symptoms that could indicate that you have a concussion. Concussions can affect multiple systems in the body including vision, balance, mood, sleep, concentration and memory. They can alter how your brain functions, so getting the appropriate treatment can decrease your chances of experiencing long-term symptoms.

Danger signs

In some cases, a concussion requires immediate, emergency treatment.  Look for these “red flag” symptoms:

  • Neck pain or tenderness
  • Double vision
  • Weakness or tingling/burning in arms or legs
  • Severe or increasing headache
  • Seizure or convulsion
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Deteriorating conscious states
  • Vomiting
  • Increasingly restless, agitate or combative

In these cases, head to the emergency room immediately for diagnosis and treatment.

Contraception Services

Contraception Services

Women have access to several types of contraception, and a patient’s needs may change over time. Find the best form of birth control for your sexual health and overall wellbeing in partnership with a women’s health specialist at Vanguard Medical Group. Serving patients in several locations throughout New Jersey, we offer contraceptive care as part of our comprehensive women’s health services. Let us help you navigate the different types of birth control options available.

Finding the Ideal Contraception

Women’s contraception comes in several forms and can serve many purposes. Many sexually active women seek contraception to help prevent unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, other patients may be prescribed a form of hormonal birth control to help alleviate or prevent specific health issues, such as:

  • Heavy or irregular periods
  • Intense menstrual cramps
  • PMS and PMDD
  • Acne
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Endometriosis
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Menstrual related migraines

At Vanguard Medical Group, the overall wellbeing of each patient is important to us. We recognize that each patient has unique needs and not every form of contraception works for every woman. Our women’s health specialists help patients find contraceptives that best suit their needs, whether it’s to prevent unintended pregnancies or alleviate a condition. The type of contraception recommended may depend on several factors, such as:

  • Age and overall health
  • Sexual activity
  • Possible risk factors
  • Potential side effects
  • Desire to have children in the future
  • Level of comfort with a particular method

The effectiveness of birth control varies and some patients may need to try a few different methods before arriving at the best and most comfortable choice for their lifestyle.  Discussing your personal and family planning needs with a physician is the first step to finding the best contraception for you.

Cosmetic Treatments

Cosmetic Treatments

Vanguard Medical Group offers the latest Cosmetic Treatments, including the use of Botox® and dermal fillers.

There are a variety of dermal fillers available today. They can be used to reduce wrinkles and add volume. In the example below, Dr. Carrazzone helps a patient achieve her desire for fuller, more symmetrical lips using Juvederm.

 Depression Services

Depression Services

Depression is more than simply feeling sad. This condition affects people of all genders, ages, and ethnicities, and an estimated 322 million people live with depression around the world. When left untreated, it can lead to problems within the family, at work or school, and in your social life. If you’re coping with the symptoms of depression, Vanguard Medical Group offers depression counseling and services to promote healing and improve your quality of life. Learn more about how we serve individuals with depression, and contact your nearest location to schedule an appointment today.

Screening and Diagnosis

By definition, depression involves negative feelings and thoughts that consume a person’s mind and disrupt one’s daily routine. Eventually, it may even take a toll on physical health if left untreated. This is because depression alters the brain’s chemistry, making it more difficult to receive the help needed when it’s needed most.

Accordingly, it’s important to address the signs and symptoms of depression as early as possible. If you or a loved one is suffering from depression, you may be experiencing some of its most common symptoms, such as:

  • Feelings of anger, frustration, irritability, sadness, self-doubt, hopelessness and loneliness
  • Fatigue and/or trouble sleeping
  • Changes in weight
  • Difficulty in maintaining personal hygiene
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Moving or speaking slowly
  • Memory loss
  • Lack of interest or enthusiasm for things you typically enjoy

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, don’t delay in scheduling a screening at your nearest Vanguard Medical Group location. The longer you wait to receive depression counseling and treatment, the more severe the disease’s impacts will become.

 Postpartum Depression Treatment

Postpartum Depression Treatment

Bringing a child into the world can be one of the most joyous and momentous occasions of a mother’s life. But in the weeks and months after your child’s birth, why are you feeling so depressed? The truth is that you’re not alone. You could be experiencing a condition called postpartum depression, and many women will experience it in their lifetime. If you notice symptoms of depression after the birth of your child, it’s important to know that you’re not alone and help is available. At Vanguard Medical Group, our doctors offer postpartum depression assessment and treatment, including referrals for counseling.

What Is Postpartum Depression?

Postpartum depression is a mood disorder that develops after some women give birth due to emotional, hormonal, and physical factors. It’s often confused with the “baby blues,” which make new moms feel fatigued, worried, or unhappy. However, these so-called blues last up to several weeks and typically go away without the need for treatment. The symptoms of postpartum depression are more severe and often require additional support to resolve. After giving birth, estrogen and progesterone levels decrease drastically. For some, the consequent chemical changes within the brain trigger postpartum depression. Women suffering from this condition experience numerous symptoms that make everyday tasks more difficult. These symptoms include:

  • Bouts of rage and increased irritability
  • Difficulty bonding with the baby
  • Overeating or not eating enough
  • Thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby
  • Crying more than normal or without a reason
  • Extreme fatigue, trouble sleeping, or oversleeping
  • Headaches, upset stomach, muscle pains, and other physical ailments
  • Avoiding loved ones
  • Losing interest in activities you once enjoyed
  • Feelings of hopelessness, sadness, anxiety, anger, emptiness, irritability, and doubt

If you notice any of these symptoms, speak with your doctor right away. While some women feel guilt about postpartum depression, you should know that it’s not your fault, and asking for help is the best thing to do.

Pre-conception counseling

Pre-conception counseling

If your plans for the future involve becoming a parent, consider pre-conception counseling in partnership with a healthcare professional. Receiving counseling well before you receive a positive test can better prepare you for pregnancy and help ensure the health of you and your baby. At Vanguard Medical Group, we offer pre-conception counseling to patients throughout New Jersey as part of our comprehensive women’s health services.

What Is Pre-Conception Counseling?

It’s important to ensure your body is ready to become pregnant and pre-conception counseling helps you prepare for a healthy pregnancy ahead of time. Several milestones in fetal development occur within the first few weeks of pregnancy, so early pre-pregnancy support and monitoring can play a key role in the health of you and your baby.

During an appointment, patients have the opportunity to discuss various health concerns with our women’s health specialists, including:

  • Personal medical history: This may include surgeries, pre-existing conditions, immunizations, allergies, and other health-related items. Patients also discuss previous pregnancies, their menstrual cycle, contraceptive use, STDs, and other areas of gynecological history.
  • Family medical history: Congenital conditions, the tendency for twins/multiples, diabetes, and other relevant parts of your family’s history, may be discussed. This helps patients prepare for the possibility of any conditions that may be passed on to a child.
  • Lifestyle: Your provider may also discuss any lifestyle choices related to smoking, drug use, nutritional wellness, exercise, environmental factors, and other areas of note.

Your appointment may also include a physical examination and laboratory tests to check for different conditions. Your physician can teach you how to chart your menstrual cycle and pinpoint when you typically ovulate each month to help ensure the best chances of conception.

Many schools, extracurricular activities, and sports programs require physical exams before the academic year begins or before a sports season begins. While they’re often needed for participation, the physical is also a great opportunity to get valuable medical feedback on your child’s health and growth. Vanguard Medical Group offers school physicals to children and teens throughout New Jersey to ensure they start the year in good health and receive the proper treatment for any conditions they may have.

What to Expect

Before this important annual visit begins, our friendly intake team will assist you with filling out your paperwork and updating your records. Then, a certified clinician will evaluate your child’s health and assess a wide variety of factors, including:

  • Family history
  • Medical history
  • Past injuries
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Blood pressure
  • Vision
  • Heart function
  • Speech
  • Other essential systems

Aside from the routine checkup, the doctor may also ask children about things like study habits, school friends, problems with bullying, eating habits, and other aspects of your child’s daily life. They will then compare their results to previous evaluations to see how your child has developed over time. The clinician will also ensure all your child’s vaccinations are current and can arrange to renew them if necessary.

Travel Medicine

Travel Medicine

Preparation and protection for international travel.

Whether you’re a college student planning to study abroad, a businessperson traveling overseas, or a couple going on that long-awaited African safari, a trip to another country is an exciting experience. But it also can pose risks to your health.

A Personal Approach in A Comfortable Environment

At Vanguard Medical Group, we’re specialists in travel. We automatically stock the proper documentation and vaccines for your international trip. Most importantly we identify potential travel risks for your trip and counsel you on how to prevent them and give you a personized guide to make sure that your trip is enjoyable and safe

Such resources aren’t always found in private practice. Most primary care physicians lack travel medicine expertise. To get the proper vaccines, patients typically go to a hospital or travel clinic. Yet a hospital or clinic can be impersonal and bureaucratic with lengthy waits.

At Vanguard, you’ll be greeted warmly, evaluated thoroughly, and be ‘in and out’ in no time. We also work directly with your insurance company to save you time and paperwork.

What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Normally, food is broken down into sugar for energy, but in a person with diabetes, his/her body can’t break down the sugars properly. Having too much sugar in your blood can lead to serious health problems if left uncontrolled, including heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and more.

Diabetes is more common in some people than in others, and some of the most common risk factors include:

  • Being age 45 or older
  • Being overweight
  • Having a history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Having a family history of diabetes
