Description

Education

Dr. Sonia Orcutt earned her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts degree at Boston University. She graduated with the College Prize for Excellence as the top student in her major, as well as summa cum laude and as a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

She received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Boston University as well, where she graduated magna cum laude and as a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.

She completed her residency in General Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.

She won several awards during her time there, including the McCollum Academic Achievement Award, the Outstanding VA General Surgery Chief Resident Award, and the Raleigh Ross Scholarship Award from the Texas Surgical Society.

She then completed fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL, where she was administrative fellow and won a merit award from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of the American Society of Clinical Oncology for her research.

Surgical Oncology Specialization

Dr. Orcutt is board certified in general surgery, and is the first board certified surgical oncologist in northern and central Illinois outside of Chicago and its suburbs. Her primary areas of interest include cancers of the liver, pancreas, small bowel, appendix, and stomach.

Within these cancer types, she has a focus on liver metastases from colorectal and neuroendocrine cancers as well as liver cancers originating in the liver.

She also has a keen interest in skin cancers and cancers of the soft tissue (sarcomas).

She is well-trained in complex surgical treatment of these patients, but just as importantly in the multidisciplinary treatment of these patients.

Especially for patients with cancer, the knowledge of how and when to coordinate care for these patients with other specialties (including medical and radiation oncology, gastroenterology, and interventional radiology) is of vital importance in providing streamlined and effective cancer care.

She is passionate about using a team approach to personalize care for each patient. Her goal is to provide top-notch surgical specialty care to patients of this community without the need to travel great distances.

Personal

Dr. Orcutt grew up in New Jersey, and has spent time in the northeast and south prior to moving to Illinois.

She is happy to make Peoria her new home. She lives here with her husband Jeff, who is a pediatric cardiac electrophysiologist at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois.
